How to Apply to an M.Ed. Degree at a University Abroad in 2020

Nothing sums up better the importance of education than the wise words of Benjamin Franklin, who once said that "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest". And you know that too, because why else would you have landed on this article?

What is an M.Ed. degree?

The Master of Education degree (Ed.M. or M.Ed.) is a type of graduate degree which helps you become an academic expert and advance your teaching career.

During an M.Ed., you will learn how to use curricula to create study plans, how to integrate the latest technologies into your classes, and how to take into account the specific needs of every student. You will also learn how to:

  • Communicate clearly
  • Encourage students
  • Monitor their progress
  • Create and implement educational plans and initiatives

As a teacher or professor, you also need to master the art of giving and receiving feedback and create development plans for yourself and for students.

M.Ed. degrees allow you to work in a variety of settings, like public and private schools, home schools, NGOs offering educational programmes, corporate environments, etc.

Find out if you match the M.Ed. admission requirements

After searching and comparing, you have decided on one or several Education degrees that you can apply to. The next thing to do is to carefully check the admission requirements for each programme to see if you fit them.

While you should always check with the university or college you have chosen the specific conditions for applying to an M.Ed., there are also general requirements applicable almost anywhere in the world.

The key eligibility condition is that you must hold a Bachelor’s degree or a qualification at equivalent level, most often in Education. The undergraduate degree can be a B.A., B.Ed., B.Tchg.  You might also be eligible if you do not have a Bachelor’s in Education, but you have worked as a teacher or trainer for at least 2 years.

If you don’t have professional teaching experience or a B.Ed. degree, but you do have an excellent track of academic achievement and you can prove you can undertake research, you can also apply.

M.Ed. application documents

Once you are sure you are eligible to apply for an M.Ed. degree, you can start collecting and preparing your application documents. Usually, your university application should include:

  • Filled application form
  • Last degree diploma obtained
  • Transcripts of records from the post-secondary institution you attended
  • An updated resume including relevant experience in education
  • Statement of purpose (why you wish to pursue an M.Ed. and how it fits into your professional plans)
  • Two-three letters of recommendation from professors and employers
  • Standardized test scores: GRE
  • Language proficiency scores: TOEFL or IELTS
  • Receipt of the application fee (if the programme has one)

Deadlines for submitting the application vary a lot from country to country and programme to programme, but in general there are two applications sessions:

  • Fall application session: typical deadlines are in January-February
  • Spring application session: typical deadlines are in September

Wait for your acceptance letter

After you have submitted your university application, you will have to wait an average of 2 months to find out if you have been accepted. But when that letter or email comes in, you can throw a big party and brag about becoming an international student who will graduate with a degree that enables you to empower students. And that’s very cool!

The acceptance letter will also come with information about the enrolment process, such as paying tuition fees and getting your proof of enrolment.
