What is a foundation degree?

Foundation degrees, also known as foundation programmes, preparation degree courses, pathway programmes, foundation years, or pre university courses are designed to provide international students with appropriate training for being admitted to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree abroad. University preparation courses complement any knowledge or qualification that international students might be lacking after finishing their high-school studies. International pathway programmes specialise in helping prospective students meet entry requirements for undergraduate and graduate studies at colleges and universities worldwide.

The main goal of a foundation degree is to offer in-depth introductions to specific subjects, as well as English language training and other skills that will help them meet future academic expectations. Many foundation year studies guarantee student admission to a specific Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the same university. University pathway courses also help students adapt to university life, meet other students and make new friends. A pre-Bachelor or pre-Master experience helps students decide to either pursue a university degree further, or switch to a different discipline or university. Preparation courses are the first step in helping students decide on their future career development.

International foundation degrees usually take 6 to 24 months to complete, depending on the course offer, and desired intensity of study.
