The Foundation Certificate for Science and Engineering prepares you for an undergraduate degree at UWE Bristol, and helps you to qualify for the 1st year of a bachelor's. You'll study a range of modules to help you:

  • Develop your academic skills
  • Improve your subject knowledge
  • Raise your English language level

Programme Structure

All students study these modules to gain a solid base of skills:

  • Extended Project

You’ll also take 2 or 3 of the following that best fit your career and degree goals (for progression to some degrees the University will require you to take particular modules):

  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Statistics

2.5 and 3 term modules

If you take a 2.5 or 3 term course you'll also study these modules if your English level is below UKVI IELTS 5.5:

  • English for Academic Study 3
  • Independent and Collaborative Study
  • Reading and Writing 3
  • Speaking and Listening 3

Or if you have at least UKVI IELTS 5.5, or do not need to take an IELTS test, you'll study these modules:

  • Critical Reading, Writing and Reasoning for Higher Education
  • Independent and Collaborative Study
  • Preparatory Mathematics
  • Preparatory Science

3.5 and 4 term modules

If you take a 3.5 or 4 term course you'll study additional modules to help you reach university:

  • English for Academic Study
  • Reading and Writing 2
  • Speaking and Listening 2
  • Study Skills Preparation

Personal development activities

During your pathway course, you'll also work on developing your online personal portfolio and practical skills, giving you a truly well-rounded experience.

                    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.                   General Requirements

                  Entry to the Foundation Certificate generally requires you to have completed high school, including equivalent of GCSE Maths and Science at grade C/4 or above. Exact entry requirements will vary depending on your country’s education system, as well as your progression degree subject.

                  You will need to show proof of your English language ability by taking a UKVI IELTS exam. For the Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering, you will need to have a minimum English language level of 5.5 with no less than 4.5 in any skill.

                  If you do not meet this English language entry level, but have at least UKVI IELTS 4.0 in all skills, we can offer you a course that includes Extended English and Skills (EES).
