The Intensive English Program with Conditional Admission program from California State University Northridge is designed to assist non-native speakers of English in improving their academic English-language skills. Students are required to attend 20 hours of instruction per week. Core 1 and 2 classes provide instruction in all language skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, public speaking and presentation, and academic research and writing (15 hours per week).

About

IEP Instructional LevelsBased on the results of the placement exam students take when they enter the Intensive English Program, students may begin their studies in one of the following IEP levels:

  • Foundation (beginning) – for students who need to build basic English-language skills
  • Academic Skills (intermediate) – core skills for university-study preparation (levels 1-5)
  • University Bridge (advanced) – transitional courses from the IEP to the university and for students who plan to receive a TOEFL waiver* for undergraduate and graduate studies

Taking University Classes (TUC): Students enrolled in Academic Skills level 3 or higher who are academically eligible may substitute university credit courses for one or more IEP courses. This feature allows students to begin working on their undergraduate or graduate degrees at CSUN while they are enrolled in IEP.

IEP Support Programs

In addition to regular IEP classes, which are held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, students can receive additional, supplemental instruction after class in order to improve skill areas where they feel they need additional assistance (i.e., TOEFL/IELTS writing) or they can choose to attend selected courses for fun (such as "Movies and American Culture"). In addition, they can receive assistance on their assignments in one-on-one tutoring sessions, intensive practice in TOEFL/IELTS Boot Camp, and practice for the TOEFL iBT exam by taking one of the three complete practice tests offered every session.

The Intensive English Program with Conditional Admission is delivered at California State University Northridge.
