Edge Hill University

Edge Hill College opened in Liverpool in 1885 as the first non-denominational teacher training college for women. From its origins as a specialist institution with 41 female trainee teachers, Edge Hill now has almost 10,000 full time students another 3,000 part time students on a wide range of undergraduate programmes, as well as almost 5,000 full and part time postgraduate students.

Student services

  • Student Services Desk are your first point of contact with the Teams, and are able to answer a wide range of questions.
  • We have produced an International Student Handbook for you to keep with you throughout your studies at Edge Hill.

Housing services

  • Our campus is a safe and secure place to live, with a supportive, sociable atmosphere that will help you feel at home from day one.
  • All rooms include a bed, wardrobe, desk and chair, and you are free to bring your own items to personalise your room. Bed linen and towels are provided in all International student rooms, although you may wish to purchase your own when you arrive. Crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are not provided so you will need to purchase these on arrival.

Library services

The University Library is situated at the heart of the Ormskirk campus. Facilities include:

  • Networked PCs and wireless access
  • Access to 200,000 items including books and audiovisual resources
  • Media loans
  • Printing and photocopying
  • A range of assistive technologies
  • Bookable individual study rooms and group rooms
  • A range of study zones – group work, quiet work and silent study

ICT services

Edge Hill University now provides an eduroam wireless network across our campuses. With eduroam you can login with any Wi-Fi compatible phone, tablet or laptop to give you secure access to the internet and other Edge Hill online services.

Medical services

Access essential health and wellbeing services such as a GP practice, an emergency room, and wellbeing advice on how to stop smoking, preventative medicine, sexual health and contraception.

Student Life

Campus life

  • Edge Hill University’s stunning campus is located in the heart of the North West, close to the thriving market town of Ormskirk and a short distance from Liverpool, Southport and Manchester.
  • The combination of beautifully landscaped grounds, state-of-the-art facilities, historic architecture, lakes and even a beach provides a unique and innovative place to study. The campus has also been ranked the safest in the North West (Complete University Guide 2015).

Sports facilities

The aims of Edge Hill Sport are to:

  • Provide the University community with a first-class sporting experience that is readily adaptable and responsive to new ideas.
  • Support and invest in the competitive student sports teams
  • Provide a recreation / social programme for staff and students
  • Operate a Sports Development Programme which actively encourages increased participation at all levels in sport and physical activity.
  • Support the expansion of Edge Hill sports clubs in terms of their key objective of providing opportunity for all members of the University to compete.
  • Support and endorse the preparation of Strategic Plans for sport at the University.

Student clubs

An active Students’ Union (SU) is at the heart of the campus, based in the Hub. It is a student-led organisation, run by students for students.

When you join a programme, you will automatically become a member of Edge Hill Students’ Union who are here to help or provide representation if you need support or advice.

The Students’ Union manages over 70 societies which bring a diverse, dynamic and fun variety of student-led activities to the campus.

CheerleadingBeing a member of a society will give you the chance to meet likeminded people, make new friends and enrich your student life.

Accreditation

Edge Hill University has a strong track record in developing degree programmes that integrate academic study with professional competencies resulting in registered practitioner status in teaching, health and social care.  However ‘accreditation’ is also available in several other degree subjects, for example Law (recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board) and Psychology (accredited by the British Psychological Society). Accreditation may extend professional body membership to Edge Hill graduates or, as in Law, provides exemption from professional examinations.
