The university has a distinguished history as the University of Ballarat, one of Australia’s oldest higher education institutions. It became Federation University Australia in January 2014 upon amalgamation with Monash University’s Gippsland Campus.

The University's history dating back to 1870 has been documented and is available for viewing.


Federation University Australia acknowledges the traditional owners of the land where its campuses and centres are located. It has set in place measures to address the disadvantage experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in education, employment and opportunity. It has formalised this commitment in the University's Compact with the Australian Government and in its policies, procedures and actions. The University seeks to provide a learning and working environment that promotes and values diversity and offers equality of access and opportunity to all.

  • We have research facilities at Ballarat Technology Park (Greenhill and SMB), Gippsland and at our environmental research station at Nanya (far western New South Wales).

The Student Careers and Employment Service has some great resources to help students plan for their career, get part-time work whilst studying, and get that all-important graduate position.

Funded by the Student Services Amenities Fee we are here to assist students gain the skills to:

  • Develop effective and eye-catching application documents (resumés, cover letters or emails, selection criteria etc)
  • Sell skills and experiences at an interview
  • Mock interviews for you to practice before a real job interview
  • Make informed career decisions
  • Plan for a successful career in their chosen discipline area, and;
  • Manage a successful career into the future.


Student services

The Student Support and Services (SSS) Portfolio provides essential services and specialist advice in support of the University's teaching and learning, research and consultancy, and community engagement activities.

Housing services

The FedUni Living Residences offer comfortable, single fully furnished bedrooms. Communal living areas consist of TV/Lounge room and fully equipped kitchens. Laundry facilities are also available at all residences.

Library services

The Library is committed to supporting students to stay in their programs of study by providing targeted and mobile services. We will make it easier for you to reach us when you need to and encourage independence through self-service functions. We are proud that while we provide increasing self-service options that you still appreciate friendly face to face service and value our staff.

ICT services

ICT Services is responsible for several key databases and the underlying electronic information infrastructure. ICT Services plays a proactive role in planning for the future electronic information and communication needs of the University in an environment that is both dynamic and rapidly expanding.

Medical services

The campus nurse provides free, confidential consultations to all students and Federation University Australia staff.

Campus life

FedUni is regional Victoria's largest education institution, with campuses in Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland and the Wimmera providing easy access to study, and approximately 1200 staff committed to teaching excellence and student support.

Sports facilities

The Student Engagement Office provides many opportunities for FedUni students to participate in sport and recreational activities both on and off  campus. Participating in our programs not only allows you to have fun and keep active, but also helps you to broaden your social network by meeting new people and making new friends.
