Our heritage can be traced back to the late 19th century with the establishment of the People’s Palace, a philanthropic organisation designed to bring culture, recreation and education to the East End. It inspired and delighted the local community with a vibrant calendar of social events and facilities including swimming baths, concerts and a Winter Garden enclosed in glass.
Queen Mary offers outstanding students a stimulating, supportive and high-quality learning experience, with teaching inspired by their world-leading research. They have also invested more than £250m in new facilities over the last fifteen years to offer our students an exceptional learning environment. This is reflected in the consistently high levels of student satisfaction. In the most recent National Student Survey (NSS 2014), 86 per cent of the undergraduates expressed 'overall satisfaction' with their time here, with eight subjects in the top ten nationally, nine subjects rated as top in London, and 20 out of 28 subjects in the top five in London.
Queen Mary has made a strategic commitment to the highest quality of research. They have invested in this principle by systematically recruiting the best academics in their disciplines from around the world. The results of the most recent national assessment of research – the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) – have confirmed our place in the very top group of research-led universities in the UK. Overall we were ranked 9th in the UK among multi-faculty universities and 5th in the UK for the percentage of our 3 and 4 research outputs.
Finding the right place to live is important - especially if this is the first time you have lived away from home. Queen Mary students are lucky with the Student Village on the Mile End campus. Over 2,000 rooms are available to students, many of them en-suite, with great facilities close by, from a launderette to shops and cafes. Living on campus makes it easy to get to the Library and lectures only a short walk away. Most students will start off living on campus, but not everyone is eligible. Priority is given to those students coming from furthest away who apply by the relevant deadline.
To register with the Library you will first need to collect your staff ID card, this is also your Library card. The barcode on the front of the card will allow you to gain access to the Library, use self-service machines and photocopiers.
The Student Health Service (SHS) is a free NHS Student Health Service providing a wide range of services. It is available for students living on campus, or those living within Tower Hamlets. It is located in the Geography Building. If you cannot register with the Student Health Service, you can find your nearest doctor through the NHS website.
Over recent years, they have invested more than £300m in new facilities, establishing an exceptional learning environment. They are the only university in central London to offer a completely integrated residential campus, with a 2,000-bed student village at the Mile End home, which creates a friendly and safe place for study. They are very lucky to be just one tube stop away from the Olympic Park and the new Westfield Stratford City shopping centre, the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. Queen Mary has five campuses. The main campus is in Mile End, a vibrant and culturally diverse area of east London, close to the financial districts of the City and Canary Wharf.
Overlooking the Regents Canal, the student village at Mile End has lots of green space, and contains contemporary accommodation, a shop, a launderette, cafés, a bar and a Santander bank branch. Based at Mile End, the Queen Marys Students Union organises social and sporting activities, and is one of the most active students unions in the University of London. A state-of-the-art health and fitness centre allows the students to balance their academic studies with a healthy lifestyle. The gym includes a ladies-only gym, two studios, a squash court and a sports hall.
The Students' Union is a good place to get advice on a range of issues, for example with academic administration.
