Royal Holloway College was founded by the Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway in 1886. The self-made multi-millionaire made his fortune in patent medicines and, after initiating a public debate inviting suggestions as to ‘how best to spend a quarter of a million pounds or more’, he took his wife’s advice that a college for women would prove ‘the greatest public good’.

Our undergraduate programmes lead to one of five University of London degrees:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA)
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc)
  • Bachelor of Science (Economics) (BSc Econ)
  • Bachelor of Music (BMus)
  • Master in Science (MSci)
Masters degrees fulfil a number of different roles – some are closely linked to research specialisms, such as Shakespeare in English and Data Science and Analytics in Computer Science. Others offer a broader preparation for research in a particular discipline, for example our MMus in Advanced Musical Studies or the MSc in Physics Research.

We have more than 900 postgraduate students conducting specialist research and collaborating with academic staff who are working at the frontiers of their subjects.

Royal Holloway is acknowledged for research excellence in the arts, humanities and sciences. Our research community attracts leading academics and research students from throughout the world and collaborates on research projects with other international universities, industry, charities, governments and public agencies.

The results of the Research Excellence Framework 2014 confirm Royal Holloway’s position among the top research-led universities in the UK, with outstanding areas in all three Faculties of Arts & Social Sciences, Management & Economics and Science.

Student Life

Campus life

We have a unique best-of-both-worlds location; a safe, leafy campus in Egham, Surrey - less than 40 minutes by train from central London and just seven miles from Heathrow airport, creating the environment where a close-knit community thrives.

Our campus is one of the most beautiful in the world with numerous teaching and study spaces, bars and cafés, high-quality accommodation, and sports facilities. All this is set in 135 acres of stunning parkland.

Most teaching and social activity takes place on campus and, with the exception of Kingswood Hall, this is where most undergraduates live in their first year. It’s a friendly place, with a strong sense of community as new students soon become familiar faces.

Sports facilities

The Sports Centre, refurbished in 2013, is situated on our main campus and is the hub of activity and sporting life at Royal Holloway. It provides a multi-use sports hall, a 46 station fitness suite, aerobics area and changing facilities. We are also pleased to be able to offer a wide range of services including personal training and fitness classes.

Student clubs

With Royal Holloway ranked as one of the top sporting colleges of the University of London, our sports clubs offer opportunities to play at a competitive level against other UK universities.

If sports are not your thing, one of our societies may offer you the opportunity to get together with other students who share your interests.

From acapella choir to juggling or Amnesty International to Indian dance, there's a wide range for you to choose from and there are also options relating to your department or course of study.
