Loughborough University dates from 1996, but its roots as a technical institute date back to 1909. Over the years, Loughborough has been awarded an outstanding seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes to recognise the contribution of our research, a record only surpassed by the University of Oxford.

The University is divided into 17 schools and departments based on our Loughborough campus, and five institutes and one academy on our London campus. We offer a diverse range of programmes from traditional academic subject areas including the humanities and sciences, through to more vocational programmes in diplomacy, design, digital technology, and business. In addition to our internationally recognised expertise in sports-based subjects, Loughborough also ranks highly for the Arts, and has a wide-range of Engineering disciplines.

Loughborough University’s research environment generates globally important work in partnership with business, public and voluntary organisations, and our inclusive approach ensures research is embedded in all that we do. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Loughborough University was ranked 9th in England for research intensity. Around 65% of the research conducted by Loughborough’s staff was judged to be ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ compared with a national average of 43%.

Here at Loughborough our aim is for our students to graduate with a host of skills valued and sought after by employers. Our Careers Network provides career advice and practical support on identifying skills, submitting applications and preparing for interviews. We also provide opportunities for students to meet potential employers at the UK’s largest careers fair, which is held every year on our Loughborough campus.

Student Life

Campus life

Located right in the heart of the country, Loughborough University is the largest single-site campus of its kind in the UK. Our Midlands location means that the whole country is within easy reach. London can be reached in less than 90 minutes by train, Birmingham is less than an hour away and Nottingham, Derby and Leicester can all be reached within 30 minutes. For trips further afield, East Midlands Airport is only a 15-minute drive away.

Our London campus, exclusively for postgraduate programmes, is located on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in the modern and high-tech facility used as the Broadcast Centre during the London 2012 Games.

Sports facilities

Loughborough University is home to the largest concentration of world-class sporting facilities in the country. These include an indoor athletics centre, an outdoor stadium, cricket and football pitches, a brand-new rugby pitch, tennis courts, a netball centre, two state-of-the-art gym facilities and much more besides. The best part is that you’ll have discounted access to all of these facilities as a Loughborough student, and they’re open to you regardless of your level of experience or ability.

Student clubs

Loughborough Students’ Union is home to over 100 student societies and aims to offer something for everyone. You can try your hand at anything from hot air ballooning through to quidditch and also join one of the many faith and cultural societies celebrating the diverse nationalities represented within our community. Students can also get involved in one of our Athletic Union sports clubs, and also compete for their hall or department in intramural competitions. The Student Union also houses LSU Media, where you can involved in the running of the university TV channel, radio station and student magazine. Elsewhere, LU Arts provides a full arts programme, including arts classes and performances throughout the academic year.

Many of our courses are accredited by relevant national governing bodies. The School of Business and Economics is one of only 1% of business schools to have achieved accreditation from all three major accrediting bodies (AACSB International, AMBA, EFMD). Our engineering courses are also accredited by prestigious institutions such as The Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, with several leading towards Chartered Engineer status.
