First founded as the Lady Byron School in 1860, the institution as it exists today was originally formed from the merger of Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, the London College of Music and Queen Charlotte’s College of Health Care Studies.

Chair of Composition/Head of Research, Professor Francis Pott, is internationally recognised especially in the field of organ music and sacred choral work. Widely published and recorded, his work has been heard in almost 40 countries and in the Vatican. An authority on the music of Nikolai Medtner, he is also a professional pianist with performance-based research interests. There is also a strong thread of electronic and electroacoustic composition practice as research within the department which encompasses both popular and art music.

Student services

The University offers a breadth of support and advice concerning both your professional and your personal life, including help with funding, learning support, health and counselling services, accommodation and a chaplaincy welcoming all faiths.

Housing services

All accommodation enquiries are dealt with by the University's Student welfare team, St Mary's Road, Ealing . The team offer a free and confidential service to all new and existing University of West London students.

Library services

The University of West London Library offers resources, high quality services and professional expertise to enable the effective discovery and use of information and the development of knowledge.

The Library currently operates in two locations, in Ealing and Reading, and offers lengthy opening hours, seven days a week.

ICT services

IT Services has to maintain and enhance the University’s core IT systems: the data network and connectivity to the Internet, the systems that support its operation (student records, finance, HR, estates etc.) as well as ensure that the services to support learning and teaching (in classrooms) are robust, fit-forpurpose, and appropriately resilient.

Medical services

The Berkshire Institute for Health, situated in Reading, is in walking distance of the main railway and bus stations, adjacent to car parking and within easy reach of the town's 'park and ride' bus stops. People come from miles around to sample Reading's shopping and nightlife. With the University of Reading in the same town, there is plenty of entertainment aimed at students and lots to do.

Campus life

Our West London campus is located in what is widely regarded as being one of the most desirable places in London to live. There is a free bus available to all students which connect the two sites, Ealing and Brentford, just 10 minutes apart. Both towns combine a vibrant, cosmopolitan atmosphere with spacious parks and relaxed cafe culture. The area is safe, beautiful, multicultural and close to both London Heathrow Airport and the very centre of the city of London.

Student clubs

When you enrol on to a course, you automatically become a member of the students' union.As a student at University of West London, the students' union champions you so that your experience is the best it can be.We are an independent organisation and we work with the University to ensure that you have the power to succeed. We also represent you nationally, and are affiliated to the National Union of Students.


Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the general term used for accreditation activities, whether based on prior certificated learning or prior experiential learning. There are four ways to get APL:
