The history of higher education in Pécs dates back to 1367, when Louis the Great initiated the establishment of a university in the episcopal city of Pécs. As a result of an integration process of several stages, the University of Pécs was founded, which has become one of the most famous, prestigious institutions having a leading role in regional education.
Due to the successful implementation of the Bologna education system, students can get involved in a dynamic, interoperable European higher education system. Instead of taking the traditional college and university courses, students first acquire an undergraduate (BA or BSc) degree, and then a Master's degree (MA or MSc). Those students who decided o dedicate some more years to science may apply for a doctoral training (PhD or DLA) as well.
The University of Pécs is one of the leading research universities in the country with a huge professional research background. The Szentágothai Research Centre is home to a number of medical and scientific researches. The university has 21 doctoral schools which cover a broad spectrum of science and arts.

For the 10th time in line the annual Career Day and Job Fair was being organized at the University of Pécs in order to provide a big variety of open positions from numerous employers, as well as practice-driven trainings and session speeches for students, freshly graduates and alumni.
The event offered an outstanding change for students to meet representatives and HR department members of about 30 exhibitor companies, e.g. Bosch, Exxon Mobil, Hauni Hungary Ltd., IT Services and Tata Consultancy Services. The programme was suitable not only for future or current jobseekers, but also for those who consider to fulfil an internship or to apply for a study abroad programme.
The University of Pécs is a very open and supportive institution. We pay special attention to helping our international students to integrate into the university as well as into the local community.
To help the new international students get a good start, the University of Pécs has a mentor system. The main task of the mentor is to provide the student with practical information about the University of Pécs and Pécs society, as well as to introduce him/her to the students and student life in general. If a student does not wish to get a mentor he/she was given the chance to reject the offer.
In questions of accommodation in Pécs, incoming students have two basic options. They may stay in a dormitory if they are eligible to it, or seek an alternative accommodation on arrival.
Accommodation in a university dormitory is offered to exchange students coming on a scholarship or through bilateral agreements between the sending university and the UP. Dormitories are located in the residential area of Pécs. The faculties of the University as well as the city centre are fairly accessible from them, only a short bus journey away.
For incoming students who demand superior quality accommodation, rented flats are an alternative.
Students and staff of the University can use the majority of library services free of charge after subscribing to any of the faculty libraries or the Central Library. As ours is a public library, our subscribers include people from the city and the region, students from various Hungarian universities and many other people.
First aid and emergency medical care are free for foreigners, in other cases you have to pay for the treatment.
The General Practitioner (GP) Service provided by the Centre for Occupational Health and Hygiene of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre offers primary care for the students of the university.
Pécs is a beautiful place to study in. It is simultaneously a friendly place and a very active city, in which students can never be bored. They can be sure they will find everything here that a student could wish for.
At the University there are many student organizations which students can join whilst studying at UP.
These offer a wide variety of professional and leisure programmes which give the members a good opportunity to meet local people, make new friends and enjoy memorable experiences. Weekly organized parties are also available for students of each faculties.
Sporting life at the University is coordinated by the TTK Sport Centre University of Pécs, which offers a wide range of sporting opportunities to the students and staff. The Centre organises various programmes that are attractive and accessible to everybody, irrespective of age, faculty or past training, which is a wonderful opportunity for recreation and regeneration.
