ELCI was established in Monmouth in 1986. ELCI has a long history of helping thousands of international students from all over the world succeed in American high schools and universities.
University admissions options after ELCI
ELCI students with sufficient TOEFL or IELTS scores can participate in the Half-Half Program with Western Oregon University and, if successful, can matriculate into the full-time academic program in the university.
TOEFL Waiver Program
ELCI students who finish Level 4 can attend Western Oregon University with the center director’s recommendation letter.
ELCI Monmouth is located in Monmouth, a college town of 10,000 people that also hosts Western Oregon University. ELCI students can use the university facilities there including the library, private study rooms, and bookstore. For a small fee, students may use the gymnasium and swimming pool.
Programs at ELCI Monmouth
The Intensive English Program is an academic program that is made for students who want to improve their English quickly to enter American high schools, universities, or to pass international English proficiency tests such as IELTS or TOEFL.
The HAVA (Homestay & Volunteer America) program is perfect for students who want a cultural program where they will stay with host families and see typical American life-styles and working environments first-hand.
The Head Start to High School program is designed to prepare students to enter American high schools in the fall. Students learn vocabulary and listening skills to help them adjust to a typical American high school curriculum.
English preparation programmes
ELCI Monmouth located right next to the campus of Western Oregon University. The students can use the university facilities there including the library, private study rooms, and bookstore. For a small fee, students may use the gymnasium and swimming pool.
During a homestay, students live with an American family. This experience can help you learn English and give you a better view into American culture. We choose our homestay families carefully and the homestay fee includes insurance and at least 2 meals a day.
If you wish to live independently or live with your friends, apartments are available close to both ELCI centers.
ELCI arranges weekly activities for our students. These activities increase the opportunities for our students to use the English they learn in class, and also to better understand American culture!
Cultural- Independence Day Parade, Dallas Summer Fest, County Fair, Christmas Tree Lighting, Museums, Portland Saturday Market, etc.
Community- Culture Fair at the Library, Cultural exchange at the Senior Center, Christmas Toys for Tots, etc.
Outdoor- Oregon Coast, Smith Rock, Hoodoo Snow Park Tubing & Skiing, Mt. Hood Skiing, Crater Lake, Silver Falls Hiking, Mulnotmah Falls, Hot Air Balloon Festival, Go Karts, Portland Zoo, etc.
Sports- Portland Blazer’s Game, Monmouth Fitness Club Group Classes, Swimming at Kroc Center, Soccer, Basketball, Mini Golf, etc.
Shopping- Oregon has no sales tax! Shop to your heart’s content!
